Beltane: Fire, Flowers & a Little Bit of Flirtation

A personal peek into one of the most joyful, juicy festivals of the year

If Samhain is the witchy New Year, then Beltane is the Spring Fling. Celebrated on May 1st (or whenever you feel that fire rising), Beltane is a Celtic festival that marks the halfway point between spring and summer. And let me tell you—it is alive with energy.

The air feels different. People start flirting with life again. Creativity blooms. And for me? Beltane is when I stop planning to plant flowers and actually do it (usually in a sundress with dirt on my knees and an iced coffee nearby).

🌸 What Is Beltane All About?

At its core, Beltane is about fertility, vitality, passion, and celebration. Back in the day, people lit bonfires and jumped over them for luck (some of us still do… or at least we light a candle and hop over the dog bed). It was also a time for lovers to sneak off into the woods, if you know what I mean. Gotta love the Lusty Month of May!

It’s the season of saying YES—to life, to pleasure, to new beginnings. And that includes everything from growing tomatoes to finally starting that art project to eating strawberries straight from the basket with zero guilt.

🔥 How to Celebrate

You don’t need a stone circle or a handfasting (an ancient Celtic and Viking tradition used to symbolize the joining of two lives in a ceremony, often used in weddings or as a betrothal ritual partner) to celebrate Beltane — although if you’ve got one, lucky you! Here are some of my favorite ways to mark the day:

1. Light Something on Fire

Candlestick with a burning candles.

Symbolically, of course.
I love lighting two candles—one red (for passion) and one white (for purity)—and setting an intention for the season ahead. Then I write down something I want to grow and place it under the candleholder like a little seed in a soil of wax and willpower.

2. Eat Something Fresh & Seasonal

This is not the holiday for dry toast or sad salad.

Think:

  • Honey-glazed carrots
  • Berries with whipped cream
  • Fresh-baked bread (store-bought counts)
  • Anything with edible flowers (because ✨aesthetic✨)

Last year I made lemon lavender shortbread cookies, they were basically edible sunshine! Let me know if you want the recipe!

3. Wear a Flower Crown

If you don’t have one in your wardrobe, make one! Don’t overthink it. Grab some floral wire or even a stretchy headband, and start tucking in dandelions, daisies, whatever’s growing near you. Imperfection is part of the charm.
Bonus: You will feel like a forest fairy. Pets may look extremely unimpressed, but you’ll be glowing.

4. Take a Walk and Touch Grass (Literally)

Beltane is the perfect excuse to unplug and feel the earth. Take your shoes off, breathe in some greenery, and whisper a thank-you to whatever trees you pass. They’ve been doing this seasonal cycle for centuries—they know what’s up.

5. Dance It Out

Even if it’s just in your kitchen.
Beltane traditionally included Maypole dances, but my modern version looks like blasting Stevie Nicks or Florence + The Machine while twirling in my socks. Movement raises energy. So yes, dancing counts as ritual. So does humming while folding laundry. Let your joy be a spell.

🌼 Goddesses Who Love a Good Celebration

Feeling like calling in some divine backup? Here are a few of my favorite Beltane goddesses:

  • Flora – Roman goddess of flowers. She’s that friend who shows up with peonies and Prosecco.
  • Rhiannon – She rides in with grace and sovereignty. Call her in when you need confidence and clarity.
  • Aphrodite – More than just beauty—she reminds you to desire yourself first.
  • Green Tara – A little less traditional for Beltane, but she brings compassion and wild feminine wisdom.

✨ A Simple Beltane Blessing

Buds are blooming, fires burn bright,

I call in joy, and love, and light.

With Beltane’s spark, my heart ignites—

I dance with life and trust what’s right.

💬 Final Thoughts (from My Sun-Kissed Deck)

Here’s the thing: you don’t have to do anything special to celebrate Beltane. Just be present. Light a candle. Eat a strawberry with intention. Say “yes” to that spontaneous invitation or new idea. Beltane is about celebrating what it means to be alive.

So whether you’re dancing under the stars or binging Bridgerton with a flower crown on your head, you’re doing it right.

Happy Beltane, my magical friend. May your heart be light, your snacks be sweet, and your fire burn bright.
